tree, tree, we hardly knew ye

It was brought down by typhoon Milenyo. Soil erosion around its base was a contributing factor to its downfall. I walk by this tree everyday for the past five years on my way to work.

About two weeks ago, it was sprouting new branches; its new leaves the color of vibrant green. Though, most of its roots have been exposed and it may have been lying on its side, it was still living.

Monday comes and I see sawed off trunks and sawdust. And I realized I don't have a picture of it living.

the model (part 2)

For anyone who's even remotely interested to what happened to my model, I present thee... the test.

I just dump newspapers on top layer by layer until it seemed like breaking, then stop.

Conclusion: passed within the acceptable limits but not strong enough. Oh well. The sem's over anyway.

* * *

You might be wondering why I'm posting this only right now. I decided to write again (God help me). And I figured to pick up where I left off.

the model

So you want to see what I have been messing around with for the past week?

Not completely finished. Have to figure out a way to make it stiffer. And stand (without props).

Then the load test...

God help us all.

scheme 10

Yup. Scheme 10. And hopefully the final one.

I had to reduce the length of bays to 5m, so I could have a module of 3m for my diagonal members. So it's basically a diamond/parallelogram shape w/ dimensions of 3m each.

eyes open wide

Probably the best picture I took in a long while...

Look into my eyes. You are veeeeeery sleepy...

scheme 4

Scheme 4 is your typical large beam/truss.

scheme 3

Scheme 3 uses a diagonal frame.

scheme 2

Scheme 1 is not posted. Scheme 2 is the mesh/grid type of frame that can be made up of small members. I'm leaning towards this because it might be actually easier to construct a model out of it.

i'm back

I'm blogging again.

Yup. I pretty much let this blog die for the past couple of months (the reason which is another long post). But I needed a venue to post school stuff so my professor can check that I'm actually doing something. Yes. You heard me correctly. School forces me to blog.

He suggested multiply.com, but I'm too damn uhm... (loyal? lazy? rigid?) to learn my way around something new. Besides, I don't want another webpage to maintain. And I do occasionally post my school stuff here, so it will be nothing new.

I did check back on my previous posts to check if there were embarrassing stuff written. I'm glad to report it's mostly sanitized. Phew.

So there will be new posts. Just not about my personal life. Never that exciting enough to begin with...

all you need is hate

Not. Dead. Yet.

Well, not if I can't help it.

God, feeling all warm and self-content is definitely preventing me from writing. Seriously, I'm wallowing in complacency here. My present situation has forced me to write sparingly. And that's my big excuse.

You want my little ones? Ok. Ok. I was too lazy to put down my thoughts yadda yadda yadda type on the keyboard yadda yadda yadda living embodiment of sloth yadda yadda. Satisfied?

As ridiculous as it sounds, in the past, misery has always been a great muse. Wait a minute.

Must. Think. Dark. Thoughts.

Ok. I think I'm going to start writing.

wait

If you can just wait a few more days...

Need the time to organize my thoughts.

nothing to declare

Who would have thought that next week could stretch to next month, huh?

Quite frankly, I just don't feel like... sharing.

i know it will rain on my wedding day

I'm off to a wedding this weekend. (Not my own.) It's in one of those towns in Quezon (a four-hour drive from Manila). Leaving tomorrow for an overnight trip, just to wake up for the early morning ceremony on Sunday. The food better be worth it...

See you next week.

time flows much more slowly this way

The other weekend, I sat, for half an hour, staring at someone inflate a backyard plastic pool. Somehow, I found the scene so... fascinating. The sight of someone laboriously pushing down on a manual pump. The slowly emerging ovoid shape as air got filled. The eager faces of kids scampering about...

There was no drama. No climax to wait for, as the outcome (barring any freak bursting at the seams or unfortunate explosion) was clearly known. I hardly noticed the 30 minutes passing so quickly.

And here I am in the office, freakin' impatient, when my browser gets a few seconds late in loading a website.

Time is indeed relative.

don't ask me to explain

Speaking of pet cats...

Cy, short for Cyclopes, a kitten born with only one eye and no nose, is shown in this photo provided by its owner in Redmond, Oregon, on Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005. The kitten, a ragdoll breed, which died after living for one day, was one of two in the litter. Its sibling was born normal and healthy. (AP Photo/Traci Allen)
Freaky... but cute... in a weird sorta way.
